Centuries ago, chess spread from Northern India into Thailand, following the path of the Buddhist monestaries. This unique form of chess is still played today throughout Thailand, and top level players compete annually in national tournaments. The same game is played in Cambodia -- though the pieces have in interesting difference in style; and the game is closely related to the Burmese form of chess, though Burma uses figurative pieces and a different opening array. Of the many forms of chess now propagated through the world, Thai chess is most similar to the original Persian/Indian game first played some 1500 years ago. The playing mat is made of paper, measuring 14 long and 15 wide inches. It is uncheckered (as shown) in the tradition of Thai form.
